The National Library of Ireland was a key location for the intellectual and social activity of 1916, and will take its place in the centenary events through a programme built around the unparalleled collections.
Collecting and making available the Irish experience to people everywhere is at the heart of the National Library’s plans for 2016. A major digitisation project will see thousands of personal archives – letters, diaries and photographs – connected with the seven signatories of the 1916 proclamation freely available online. The first digital images from this project will go online in October 2015, and the NLI will be engaging the public through its social media platforms to discover more about these collections.
In addition to making these historic materials available, the National Library will fulfil its mission to collect the record of Ireland today, in which so much of the national conversation about 1916 will take place online, through its web archiving programme. The public will be asked to help select the key websites that tell the story of 2016, so that their content can be harvested and preserved for the next 100 years.
Alongside these raw materials of history, the NLI will be offering a series of curated perspectives on 1916, onsite and online. Its magnificent front hall will offer a carefully selected display of key individual documents of 1916, while the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar will feature extraordinary images of the events and locations of 1916.
The manuscript of the poem “Easter 1916” will be on display in the NLI’s exhibition Yeats: The Life and Works of WB Yeats, and its exhibition World War Ireland, which explores the Irish experience of WWI, will have a module dedicated to Ireland’s experience of WWI during 1916. The NLI’s online exhibition The 1916 Rising: Personalities and Perspectives (www.nli.ie/1916) will continue to be freely available worldwide.
The NLI will offer a free programme of events and activities for schools, the culturally curious, and lifelong learners of all ages and levels throughout the year, in keeping with its long tradition as a centre for learning and debate. This programme will range from the series “Inspiration Proclamation”, in which major figures will explore the resonance of themes of the 1916 Proclamation, to themed school workshops around original documents, and from performances of literature related to 1916 throughout the historic buildings, to a 1916 song research and performance project.

Cuirfear lámhscríbhinn an dáin “Easter 1916” ar taispeáint i dtaispeántas Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann dar teideal ‘Yeats: The Life and Works of William Butler Yeats’; agus sa taispeántas ‘World War Ireland’, ina ndéantar iniúchadh ar thaithí na hÉireann ar an gCéad Chogadh Domhanda, díreofar i modúl ar leith ar thaithí na hÉireann ar an gCéad Chogadh Domhanda le linn na bliana 1916.
