‘Was it for This?’: A spectrum of opinion on the Rising over the last 100 years ‘Was it for This?’: Réimse tuairimí faoin Éirí Amach le 100 bliain anuas

Boasting a broad spectrum of opinions from prominent figures in Irish life over the last 100 years, 'Was it for This?' gathers this myriad of reflections on the Rising and asks what it means to us today.

Faightear a lán tuairimí ó dhaoine mór le rá i saol na hÉireann le 100 bliain anuas in ‘Was it for This?’. Déantar an-chuid machnaimh ar an Éirí Amach agus fiafraítear dínn cad a chiallaíonn sé dúinn sa lá atá inniu ann.

Edited by Irish Times journalist Ronan McGreevy and published in partnership with the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, readers can enjoy a journey through the ten decades since 1916 with a collection of vibrant writings from well-known politicians, historians and journalists, each reflecting a unique opinion informed by the era during which it was written.

With most of the reflections taken from the archives of The Irish Times, the visceral standpoint of the likes of Seán O’Casey sits alongside that of post-Independence Irish writers like Seán Ó Faoláin and John McGahern, historians such as Diarmaid Ferriter and Ruth Dudley Edwards, as well as former Taoisigh Garret FitzGerald and John Bruton.

Bookended by The Irish Times’ editorials from the day after the Rising - “This newspaper has never been published in stranger circumstances than those which obtain today.” - and from New Year’s Day of this centenary year, its editorials, letters and columns reveal every nuance of opinion on the Rising.

From Nationalist perspectives to heated exchanges on its legacy, to a lamenting of the State and church’s relationship that followed, what the book’s collection of opinions demonstrates is that the Rising holds diverse meanings for everyone and that every generation since 1916 sees it through the prism of their own experience.

Ag a thús agus ag a dheireadh tá na heagarfhocail de chuid The Irish Times ón lá i ndiaidh an Éirí Amach – “Níor cuireadh an nuachtán seo i gcló i gcúinsí níos aistí riamh ná cúinsí an lae inniu”. – agus ó Lá Caille na bliana comórtha seo. Tugtar na miondifríochtaí uile idir na tuairimí faoin Éirí Amach sna heagarfhocail, sna litreacha agus sna colúin.
