Sligo conference examines Ireland’s revolutionary women Déantar iniúchadh i gcomhdháil i Sligeach ar mhná réabhlóideacha na hÉireann

A three-day conference on the vital role that women played during 1916 takes place at the Sligo home of Countess Markievicz this weekend.

Comhdháil trí lá maidir leis an ról ríthábhachtach a bhí ag mná i rith 1916 a bheidh ar siúl i dteach cónaithe Chuntaois Markievicz an deireadh seachtaine seo.

Presented by Sligo Field Club, Ireland's Women: Revolution and Remembrance examines the significant and under-celebrated part that Ireland’s women played in the country’s revolutionary period of history 100 years ago.

Far from being mere tea-makers, following the imprisonment of the thousands of men during Easter week the Rising’s women fought the battle to turn public sentiment in the rebels’ favour. Doggedly fighting the British propaganda surrounding the Rising, the women held vigils, gave public talks and lectures in an effort to keep the spark that Easter week ignited alive, collected much-needed funds and even forced the Catholic Church to speak out against the executions by getting photographed in prayer outside Kilmainham Gaol.

Now in its eighth year, this annual three-day conference will comprehensively examine the direct and indirect roles of women in Ireland’s revolutionary period. From May 13th - 15th 2016 enjoy this enlivening and expansive series of talks, theatrical performances, live music, poetry and historical inquiry, all with a focus on the contributions of women to the transformation of the nation.

The weekend’s cultural highlights include:

  • A performance of Cathleen Ni Houlihan by the Dr Dappertutto Theatre
  • Bua, Sligo’s all-female choir
  • A travelling exhibition on Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth
  • Broken Glory, a play by Mary Branley based on the writings of Eva and Constance Gore-Booth.

Á chur i láthair ag Club Allamuigh Shligigh, Ireland’s Women: Revolution and Remembrance, déanfar scrúdú ar an ról suntasach, ar beag aitheantas atá tugtha dó, a bhí ag mná na hÉireann i dtréimhse réabhlóideach staire na tíre 100 bliain ó shin.

Ní tae amháin a bhí á dhéanamh ag na mná; tar éis do na húdaráis na mílte fear a chur sa phríosún i rith sheachtain na Cásca, thug mná an Éirí Amach orthu féin meon an phobail a athrú i bhfabhar na reibiliúnach. Agus iad ag troid go fíochmhar i gcoinne bholscaireacht na Breataine maidir leis an Éirí Amach, bhí bigilí ag na mná, thug siad óráidí poiblí agus léachtaí mar iarracht chun an splanc a cruthaíodh i rith sheachtain na Cásca a choinneáil ar lasadh, bhailigh siad airgead a bhí ag teastáil go géar agus chuir siad iallach fiú ar an Eaglais Chaitliceach labhairt amach i gcoinne na mbásuithe trí ghrianghraf a ghlacadh díobh féin ag guí lasmuigh de Phríosún Chill Mhaighneann.

Seo é an t-ochtú bliain ag an gcomhdháil bhliantúil trí lá seo ina ndéanfar scrúdú cuimsitheach ar róil dhíreacha agus indíreacha na mban i dtréimhse réabhlóideach na hÉireann. Ón 13-15 Bealtaine 2016 bain sult as an tsraith bhríomhar leathan seo ina mbeidh cainteanna, léirithe téatair, ceol beo, filíocht agus fiosrúchán stairiúil, agus iad go léir dírithe ar chúnamh na mban do chlaochlú an náisiúin.

I measc bhuaicphointí cultúrtha an deiridh seachtaine beidh:

  • Léiriú de Cathleen Ni Houlihan le Dr Dappertutto Theatre
  • Bua, cór uile-bhan Shligigh
  • Taispeántas taistil ar an gCuntaois Markievicz agus ar a deirfiúr Eva Gore-Booth
  • Broken Glory, dráma le Mary Branley bunaithe ar scríbhneoireacht Eva agus Constance Gore-Booth.
  • Léiriú speisialta le Saile, grúpa ceoil traidisiúnta don óige ó Shligeach agus ó Ros Comáin.
