The Other 1916: A fresh look at Ireland’s history The Other 1916: Dearcadh úr ar stair na hÉireann

A lot can happen in a year. If the Rising hadn’t taken place when it did, how would we speak of 1916 in Ireland’s history?

Is mór an t-athrú a d’fhéadfadh tarlú in aon bhliain amháin. Dá mba rud é nár tharla an tÉirí Amach nuair a tharla, cén chaoi a mbreathnódh muid ar 1916 mar chuid de stair na hÉireann

Europe in 1916 was a wildly changing place. Nearly two decades into the new century, hot on the heels of the second industrial revolution, groundbreaking inventions were being unveiled at breakneck speed. World War I was raging, with some of the bloodiest battles in history being fought at Verdun and the Somme.

In America, the National Park Service was created and the first birth control clinic opened in Brooklyn, New York. Charlie Chaplin became the highest paid actor in showbusiness. Albert Einstein finished the mathematical formulation of his general history of relativity, which included gravity.

These events, along with many more, form important parts of the narratives of national histories around the globe. In Ireland, justifiably, 1916 is nearly exclusively synonymous with the Easter Rising and the events that followed, but buried under this momentous national shift, key cultural events were being played out, to little public awareness.

James Joyce published A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics was released. The Film Company of Ireland was established and, historians now know, World War I reached its halfway mark, with plenty of Irish troops fighting abroad.

The Other 1916, which takes place at IADT in Dun Laoghaire on June 3rd, is a conference with a difference: it seeks to sift through the familiar themes of destruction, sacrifice, and upheaval which govern the accounts of 1916, and instead present an alternative version of historical events, every bit as factual, to see how we might perceive Ireland’s place in the global story of modernity with a bit more balance at play.

Exploring how dominant historical and political narratives can overshadow or even whitewash the myriad other significant events in a time period, it’s a unique chance to open up a discourse about the influences on Irish life by a broader range of factors than perhaps we’re used to acknowledging.

Bhí athruithe móra ag teacht ar an saol san Eoraip i 1916. Bhí beagnach scór bliain den chéad nua caite agus bhíothas díreach tagtha tríd an dara réabhlóid thionsclaíoch, agus bhí fionnachtana ceannródaíocha ag teacht ar an saol gan stad gan staonadh. Bhí an Chéad Chogadh Domhanda á throid go fíochmhar, agus cuid de na cathanna ab fhuiltí dá bhfacthas riamh ag titim amach ag Verdun agus ag an Somme.

Cuireadh Seirbhís Náisiúnta na bPáirceanna ar bun i Meiriceá agus osclaíodh an chéad chlinic breithrialaithe in Brooklyn, Nua-Eabhrac. Tharla sé go raibh Charlie Chaplin ar an dara haisteoir ba mhó tuarastail i ngnó na siamsaíochta. Chuir Albert Einstein críoch leis an bhfoirmiú matamaitice do theoiric ghinearálta na coibhneasachta, a raibh domhantarraingt mar chuid de.

Is codanna tábhachtacha de startha náisiúnta ar fud na cruinne na himeachtaí seo, agus go leor eile mar iad. In Éirinn, mar a shílfeá, nuair a smaoiníonn tú ar 1916 smaoiníonn tú láithreach ar Éirí Amach na Cásca agus na himeachtaí a lean é, ach taobh thiar den mhórathrú náisiúnta seo bhí imeachtaí tábhachtacha cultúrtha ag titim amach i ngan fhios don tromlach.

D’fhoilsigh James Joyce ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’; seoladh ‘Course in General Linguistics’ le Ferdinand de Saussure. Bunaíodh Comhlacht Scannán na hÉireann agus, mar is eol do staraithe anois, bhíothas leath bhealaigh tríd an gCéad Chogadh Domhanda, agus bhí go leor leor saighdiúirí Éireannacha ag troid thar lear.

Comhdháil thar a bheith éagsúil a bheidh in The Other 1916, a bheidh ag tarlú in IADT i nDún Laoghaire an 3 Meitheamh: déanfar iarracht breathnú níos faide ná téamaí coitianta an scriosta, na híobartha agus an réabtha a shamhlaítear go rímhinic le 1916, agus ina n-ionad sin cuirfear leagan éagsúil den stair i láthair, bunaithe san fhírinne, le go bhfeicfear an chaoi a mbreathnófaí ar ról na hÉireann i scéal domhanda an nua-aoiseachais ó pheirspictíocht neamhchlaonta.

Déanfar iniúchadh ar an gcaoi ar féidir le hinsintí ceannasacha stairiúla agus polaitiúla teacht salach ar an iliomad imeachtaí tábhachtacha le linn tréimhse ama, agus deis iontach atá ann dioscúrsa a chur ar bun faoin réimse leathan fachtóirí a imríonn tionchar ar shaol na hÉireann - réimse níos leithne ná mar a shamhlaíonn muid go hiondúil.
