Conflict and the City conference comes to Liberty Hall Comhdháil maidir le Coimhlint agus an Chathair ag Halla na Saoirse

Explore how the ruin and reconstruction of urban spaces informs how we live in our cities and towns, at this free two-day public conference.

Breathnaigh ar an tionchar a bhíonn ag scriosadh agus atógáil spásanna cathartha ar an saol inár gcuid cathracha agus bailte mar chuid den chomhdháil phoiblí seo a bheidh saor in aisce agus ar siúl ar feadh dhá lá.

April 26, 1916 found Liberty Hall, headquarters of the Irish Citizen Army and printing place of the Proclamation, abandoned by rebel and volunteer forces and under heavy fire from the gunship Helga.

By the end of Easter week, with much of Dublin city centre in ruins, the destruction to Liberty Hall was indeed great, but the building was spared the complete devastation of neighbouring structures. It was eventually restored along with much of the city and continued to serve as the home of workers unions until its demolition in the late 1950s.

The sixteen storey icon of Dublin's skyline we know today, constructed in the mid 1960s on the same site, will host a very special two-day conference on the nature of demolition and restoration surrounding civil disharmony, looking at the ways in which Ireland’s capital in particular has been shaped by battles and bombs.

Conflict and the City will focus on the key period of combat - 1916-1922 - and how the subsequent urban rebuilding schemes of the 1920s created the city we inhabit today. Bringing together architects, historians, archaeologists and geographers, the conference aims to unpack what is known about European and global urban planning in the face of mass destruction and to see how Dublin’s story fits into the wider perspective.

Compare London’s post-Blitz repairs to the postwar restoration efforts of cities like Beirut and Belfast. With highly visual presentations and a wealth of themes - from defence to future vision - the full, complex breadth of conflict on our civil spaces will be explored.

The conference will end with a special screening in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute.

Faoin 26 Aibreán, 1916 bhí Halla na Saoirse, ceanncheathrú Arm Cathartha na hÉireann agus an áit a ndearnadh an Forógra a phriontáil ann, tréigthe ag na fórsaí reibiliúnacha agus ag na hÓglaigh agus faoi lámhach an árthaigh gunnaí Helga.

Faoi dheireadh sheachtain na Cásca, agus cuid mhór de lár Bhaile Átha Cliath ina fothracha, bhí dochar uafásach déanta do Halla na Saoirse, ach ní dhearnadh scrios iomlán air mar a rinneadh ar na foirgnimh eile taobh leis. Rinneadh athchóiriú air ar deireadh, mar a rinneadh ar chuid mhór den chathair, agus d’fhan sé mar cheanncheathrú ceardchumann oibrithe gur leagadh é i ndeireadh na 1950idí.

Tógadh foirgneamh nua sé urlár déag ar an láthair chéanna i lár na 1960idí atá anois mar chuid so-aitheanta d’fhíor na bhfoirgneamh i mBaile Átha Cliath, agus is ansin a reáchtálfar comhdháil speisialta dhá lá ina mbreathnófar ar bhriseadh agus ar atógáil a bhaineann le corraíl shibhialta, agus ar bhealaí ina ndearna cathanna agus buamaí múnlú ar phríomhchathair na hÉireann.

Díreofar in Coimhlint agus an Chathair ar an mórthréimhse comhraic - 1916-1922 - agus ar an gcaoi ar chruthaigh na scéimeanna atógála cathrach a lean í le linn na 1920idí an chathair a bhfuil cónaí orainn inti sa lá atá inniu ann. Tiocfaidh idir ailtirí, staraithe, sheandálaithe agus tíreolaithe le chéile ag an gcomhdháil seo, agus tá sé de sprioc ag an gcomhdháil an t-eolas atá ann maidir le pleanáil chathrach na hEorpa agus an domhain trí chéile i láthair an ollscriosta a chíoradh agus stair Bhaile Átha Cliath a lonnú i gcomhthéacs níos leithne.

Déanfar comparáid idir an atógáil i Londain i ndiaidh an Blitz agus iarrachtaí athchóirithe tar éis cogaidh i gcathracha ar nós Bhéiriút agus Bhéal Feirste. Déanfar cíoradh ar iomlán an tionchair mhóir chasta a bhíonn ag coimhlint ar ár gcuid spásanna cathartha le cuir i láthair fhísiúla agus neart téamaí éagsúla - ó chúrsaí cosanta go dtí físeanna don todhchaí.

Cuirfear deireadh leis an gcomhdháil le léiriú speisialta i gcomhar le hInstitiúid Scannán na hÉireann.
