45th Listowel Writers’ Week to include reflections on the Rising Machnamh ar an Éirí Amach le bheith mar chuid den 45ú Seachtain Scríbhneoirí i Lios Tuathail

Before 1916 Robert Lynd

Now in its 45th year, the internationally acclaimed literary festival will include an event celebrating the words of 1916’s national and local heroes.

Beidh ócáid a dhéanfaidh ceiliúradh ar fhocail laochra áitiúla agus náisiúnta 1916 mar chuid den fhéile liteartha a bhfuil cáil idirnáisiúnta bainte amach aici agus atá ann anois le 45 bliain.

Taking place in the idyllic heritage town of Listowel, North Kerry from June 1st - 5th 2016, the setting for this exceptional festival couldn’t be better given that it’s the birthplace of luminaries like Dr. John B. Keane, Dr. Bryan MacMahon, Professor Brendan Kennelly, George Fitzmaurice, Maurice Walsh and Robert Leslie Boland.

An innovative literary festival that connects writers and audiences with unique events, just some of this year’s programme includes appearances by Gerbrand Bakker, Joanne Harris, A.C. Grayling, Danielle McLaughlin, David Park, Lucy Caldwell, Louis De Berniéres, Anakana Schofield, Patrick De Witt, James Runcie and A.L. Kennedy.

Also in attendance will be Pulitzer prize-winning poets Paul Muldoon and Gregory Pardlo, as well as award-winning writers Jean Echenoz from France and Israel’s Savyon Liebrecht.

One of the week’s programme includes an event on June 3rd commemorating Kerry-native The O’Rahilly (Michael Joseph O’Rahilly), a founding member of the Irish Volunteers who died by British gunfire retreating from the GPO during Easter Week. On June 4th The Stinging Fly present In the Wake of the Rising, which sees 43 writers respond to the events of 1916 and its legacy via short stories, essays, memoirs, poems and drama.

Other Rising-related events in the programme include:

  • Two historians giving national and local perspectives of the Rising
  • Actors performing stage readings of work by men and women of 1916
  • Music of 1916
  • An exhibition to interpret the works of the poets and writers of the 1916 Rising

Kerry poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice will also be resident at this year’s festival and will visit 10 national schools around Listowel, Tralee and Ardfert discussing the Proclamation and what it means to the children of 1916 and today. The children will submit either a poem or prose piece to Listowel Writers’ Week for a special reading and event during the festival.
