1916 and WWI to be commemorated with Concert for Peace Comóradh ar 1916 agus Cogadh Domhanda I i gCeolchoirm na Síochána

Taking place at the newly refurbished Knock Basilica, the church's inaugural concert commemorates 1916 and World War I.

Déanfar comóradh i gcéad-cheolchoirm an tséipéil ar 1916 agus ar an gCéad Chogadh Domhanda i mBaisleac Chnoc Mhuire atá athchóirithe as an nua.

Featuring the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and a 120-strong Peace Choir, this major choral and orchestral performance will be conducted by David Brophy on Saturday May 14th.

President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins will attend the concert as guests of honour.

The unprecedented scale of this special concert will see close to 200 artists perform on the night, as part of Knock Basilica’s re-opening following a multi-million euro refurbishment.

Presented by The Mayo International Choral Festival, the concert is held in commemoration of the Easter Rising and World War I, and features excerpts from Sir Karl Jenkins’ international choral sensation The Armed Man and renowned film composer Patrick Cassidy’s Elegy Suite for 1916. Seventeen-year-old Sibéal Ní Chasaide will also perform Mise Éire live with the orchestra, a new arrangement of Patrick Pearse's 1912 poem set to music. The piece was also composed by Patrick Cassidy, Sibéal’s uncle.

Mayo’s own Mezzo Soprano Anne Marie Gibbons and Limerick’s Tenor Owen Gilhooly will also perform with the choir, which sees members of the Ballina Chamber Choir, Cór Mhaigh Eo and Dún Laoghaire Choral Society join voices in a spectacular choral display.

A wonderful opportunity to see David Brophy, the leading Irish conductor of today, at the helm of the unrivalled RTÉ Concert Orchestra, this musical showcase is set to be a fitting tribute to the people of 1916 and World War I.

The concert will be presented by Liz Nolan of RTÉ Lyric FM.

Is deis iontach é chun David Brophy – príomhstiúrthóir na hÉireann sa lá atá inniu – a fheiceáil agus é ag stiúradh Cheolfhoireann Choirme RTÉ nach bhfuil a sárú ann. Is cinnte go dtabharfar ómós cuí sa taispeántas ceoil seo don dream a bhain le 1916 agus don Chéad Chogadh Domhanda.
