Bray Jazz will host the premiere of an innovative new composition written by jazz musician and composer Ronan Guilfoyle to celebrate the role that his late grandfather played in the Rising and Ireland’s War of Independence.

Óstálfaidh Snagcheol Bhré an chéad taibhiú de phíosa nua nuálach a scríobh an cumadóir agus an ceoltóir snagcheoil Ronan Guilfoyle chun an ról a bhí ag a sheanathair (nach maireann) san Éirí Amach agus i gCogadh na Saoirse a cheiliúradh.

Staged with support from the County Wicklow Centenary Fund, the presentation by Ireland’s foremost jazz player uses composition, improvisation and audio recordings to explore the life and times of Joe Guilfoyle, who took part in the 1916 Rising and was a member of Michael Collins’ inner circle during the War of Independence.

Guilfoyle will be joined by top English trumpeter Nick Smart, who is Head of Jazz at London’s Royal Academy of Music; by Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura, and by leading Irish players Sam Comerford (saxophone), Matthew Jacobson (drums) and Chris Guilfoyle (guitar). The piece will explore the different aspects of Joe Guilfoyle’s life, from his revolutionary youth to the dignified and quietly spoken grandfather that Ronan Guilfoyle knew in his childhood. Ronan Guilfoyle is a major figure in Irish jazz, and has developed an international reputation as a performer, teacher and composer. An in-demand bassist both in his native Ireland and internationally, he has performed with an array of jazz music’s leading lights, including Kenny Wheeler, Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Benny Golson, and Kenny Werner.

Tá an léiriú á chur ar an stáitse a bhuíochas le tacaíocht ó Chiste Comórtha Céad Bliain Chontae Chill Mhantáin. Bainfidh an seinnteoir snagcheoil is mó le rá in Éirinn úsáid as cumadóireacht, tobchumadóireacht agus taifeadtaí fuaime ina chur i láthair chun iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar shaol Joe Guilfoyle, a ghlac páirt in Éirí Amach 1916 agus a bhí ina bhall de chiorcal órga Mhichíl Uí Choileáin le linn Chogadh na Saoirse.

In éineacht le Guilfoyle beidh an sárthrumpadóir Sasanach Nick Smart, atá ina Cheannasaí Snagcheoil san Acadamh Ríoga Ceoil i Londain; an pianódóir Seapánach Izumi Kimura; agus na seinnteoirí móra Éireannacha Sam Comerford (sacsafón), Matthew Jacobson (drumaí) agus Chris Guilfoyle (giotár). Déanfar iniúchadh sa phíosa ar ghnéithe éagsúla de shaol Joe Guilfoyle – an t-ógánach réabhlóideach agus an seanathair maorga ciúinbhriathrach a raibh aithne ag Ronan Guilfoyle air ina óige. Is duine mór le rá é Ronan Guilfoyle i gcúrsaí snagcheoil na hÉireann. Tá clú agus cáil bainte amach aige ar fud na cruinne mar thaibheoir, múinteoir agus cumadóir. Tá éileamh air mar dhordghiotáraí in Éirinn agus ar fud an domhain. Sheinn sé in éineacht le cuid mhór mórphearsana snagcheoil lena n-áirítear Kenny Wheeler, Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Benny Golson, agus Kenny Werner.
