Conradh na Gaeilge is commemorating the Easter Rising in a very special way this year with Plé 16, a series of seminars and debates examining the role of the language revival movement and the Irish language in the lives of the leaders of the Rising, as well as in modern life. On August 20th, Plé 16 will come to Derry for a special day conference in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáinn to explore questions of language rights, both past and present.

I mbliana, leis an sraith Plé 16, tá Conradh na Gaeilge ag déanamh comóradh speisialta ar Éirí Amach na Cásca le sraith seimineár agus díospóireachtaí a dhéanann cíoradh ar ról na heagraíochta teanga agus na Gaeilge i saol cheannairí an Éirí Amach agus i saol an lae inniu. Ar an 20ú Lúnasa reachtálfar comhdháil lae i gCultúrlann Uí Chanáin i nDoire chun ceist na gcearta teanga, mar a bhí agus mar atá, a scrúdú.

The impact on minority languages as a result of the recent referendum on United Kingdom membership of the European Union is certain to be part of the discussion on the day, and it is for this reason that Conradh na Gaeilge has invited experts with a specialist knowledge of current conditions in the various jurisdictions in these islands to speak in Derry.

The Conference will begin at 11am with a special lecture by the writer and philosopher Tomás Mac Síomóin that will focus on the role of the Irish language revival in the decolonisation process. Tomás lives currently in Catalonia, which gives him a unique perspective on cultural, political, and social issues. Mac Síomóin has also written frequently on the Irish language question, especially the close connections between the Irish language movement and the Easter Rising.

In the second half of the conference, Meri Huws, the Welsh Language Commissioner; Rónán Ó Domhnaill, the Irish Language Commissioner; Diarmaid Ua Bruadair, Principal of Gaelcholáiste Doire, and the Belfast-based solicitor Michael Flanigan will discuss the current state of minority language rights north and south, in the United Kingdom, and in the European Union. Cóilín Ó Cearbhaill,  President of Conradh na Gaeilge, will chair the seminar, which will be open to the public free of charge. A simultaneous translation service will also be available.

More information on the event can be found on Conradh na Gaeilge’s social media channels, on their website or by emailing eolas@cnag.ie.

Is cinnte go mbeidh tionchar na reifrinne ar bhallraíocht na Ríochta Aontaithe san Aontas Eorpach ar mhionteangacha mar chuid de na hábhair plé ar an lá, agus is chuige seo a bhuil cuireadh chun cainte tugtha ag an gConradh do shaineolaithe a bhfuil tuiscint faoi leith acu ar an staid reatha i ndlínsí éagsúla na n-oileáin seo.

Cuirfear tús leis an gcomhdháil ag a 11 le léacht speisialta ón scríbhneoir agus fealsúnaí Tomás Mac Síomóin a dhíreoidh ar ghluaiseacht Athbheochan na Gaeilge i gcomhthéacs na díchóilíneachta. Tá conaí ar Thomáis sa Chatalóin faoi láthair, rud a thugann peirspeictíocht éagsúil aige ar cheisteanna chultúrtha, polaitiúla, agus sochúla. Tá neart foilsithe ag Mac Síomóin freisin ar cheist na Gaeilge, ach go háraithe an dlúthbhaint idir ghluaiseacht na Gaeilge agus Éirí Amach na Cásca.

Sa dara leath don chomhdháil, pléfidh Meri Huws, Coimisinéir Teanga na Breataine Bige; Rónán Ó Domhnaill, an Coimisnéir Teanga; Diarmaid Ua Bruadair, Príomhoide Ghaelcholáiste Doire; agus an dlíodóir Mícheál Ó Flannagáin, an chaoi ina bhfuil cúrsaí cearta teanga mar atá sa lá atá inniu ann ó thuaidh, ó dheas, sa Ríocht Aontaithe, agus san Aontas Eorpach. Feidhmeoidh Uachtarán Chonradh na Gaeilge, Cóilín Ó Cearbhaill mar chathaoirleach ar an seimineár, a bheas oscailte don phobal uilig saor in aisce. Beidh seirbhís aistriúcháin comhuaineach ar fáil freisin ar an lá.

Tá tuilleadh eolas ar fáil ar chainéalacha meáin shóisialta Chonradh na Gaeilge, ar shuíomh idirlín an Chonartha nó trí ríomhphost a sheoladh chuig eolas@cnag.ie.
