Ladies of Science is a short film about Mary Rosse and Mary Ward.

Is gearrscannán é Ladies of Science faoi Mary Rosse agus Mary Ward.

Mary Rosse, the wife of the 3rd Earl, was born in 1813 at Heaton Hall, near Bradford in Yorkshire, daughter and co-heiress with her sister, of a wealthy landowner. Her father, having no sons, brought the girls up with an excellent education, which included mathematics and scientific subjects.

Mary Ward was born in Ferbane, the youngest child of Henry and Harriett King. She and her sisters were educated at home, as were most girls at the time. However, her education was slightly different from the norm because she was of a renowned scientific family. Mary was a keen star-gazer, like her cousin William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse. He was building the Leviathan of Parsonstown, a reflecting telescope with a six-foot mirror.

Mary often visited him at his home and, as she was a good artist, sketched each stage of the process. These sketches, along with photographs made by Parson's wife Mary Rosse, were used recently to help restore the telescope.

The screening will take place on August 24th in Birr Library during Heritage Week 2016

Rugadh Mary Rosse, bean chéile an 3ú Iarla, i 1813 ag Heaton Hall, gar do Bradford in Yorkshire, iníon agus comhoidhre in éineacht lena deirfiúr, ar úinéir talún saibhir. Ní raibh aon chlann mhac ag a hathair, agus chuir sé oideachas den scoth ar na cailíní ag éirí aníos dóibh, agus ina measc bhí ábhair matamaitice agus eolaíochta.

Rugadh Mary Ward san Fhéar Bán, an leanbh ab óige a bhí ag Henry agus Harriett King. Cuireadh oideachas uirthi féin agus ar a deirfiúracha sa bhaile, rud ab fhíor i gcás go leor cailíní ag an am. Mar sin féin, bhí an t-oideachas a fuair sí beagán difriúil ón ngnáthoideachas toisc gur tháinig sí as teaghlach eolaíochta a raibh cáil mhór orthu. Ba bhreá le Mary a bheith ag faire ar na réaltaí, cosúil lena col ceathrar William Parsons, 3ú Iarla Rosse. Bhí sé ag tógáil Leiviatan Parsonstown, teileascóp frithchaiteach le scáthán sé troigh ar airde.

Ba mhinic le Mary cuairt a thabhairt air ag a theach cónaithe agus, toisc gurbh ealaíontóir maith a bhí inti, sceitseáil sí gach céim den phróiseas. Úsáideadh na sceitsí sin, mar aon le grianghraif a rinne bean chéile Parson Mary Rosse, le gairid chun an teileascóp a athchóiriú.

Beidh an léiriú ar siúl an 24 Lúnasa i Leabharlann Bhiorra i rithSheachtain na hOidhreachta 2016
