Located at the childhood home of Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth, this three-day conference, presented by Sligo Field Club, will examine the role that they and Ireland’s women played in the revolutionary period of Irish history 100 years ago.

Ag an gcomhdháil trí lá seo a bheidh ar bun sa teach inar fhás an Cuntas Markievicz agus a deirfiúr Eva Gore-Booth aníos, á cur i láthair ag Club Allamuigh Shligigh, déanfar imscrúdú ar an ról a bhí acu féin agus ag mná na hÉireann sa tréimhse réabhlóideach de stair na hÉireann 100 bliain ó shin.

The independence movement could not have succeeded without the contribution of Ireland’s women and the decisive roles they played.

After the imprisonment of thousands of men at and after the close of Easter week 1916, women were left at the forefront of the battle to win the hearts and minds of the people of Ireland. They fought the English propaganda machine, held vigils, public talks and lectures, collected funds, and forced the Catholic church to speak out against the executions by being photographed praying outside Kilmainham Gaol.

Sligo Field Club honours the influence of these women in their 8th Annual Conference entitled Ireland’s Women: Revolution and Remembrance. This three-day weekend event will comprehensively examine the roles - whether direct or indirect - of women in the revolutionary period in Ireland.

From May 13-15, 2016 enjoy this enlivening and expansive series of talks, theatrical performances, live music, poetry and historical inquiry, all with a focus on the contributions of women to the transformation of our nation.

Some of the weekend highlights include:

  • An examination of women in the writing of WB Yeats, presented by John Kavanagh.
  • Cathleen Ni Houlihan, performed by the Dr Dappertutto Theatre.
  • A collective of artists either originating or based in the Northwest of Ireland or connected with IT Sligo’s B.A Hons in Performing Arts.
  • A special performance by Saile, a traditional youth music group from Sligo and Roscommon. Influenced by the two Sligo fleadhs they came together one year ago under the mentorship of Tom Gavin. They present a combination of music, song and dance with passion and with a lively flair.
  • Bua, an all-female choir from Sligo with a twist.
  • Broken Glory, a play by Mary Branley based on the writings of Eva and Constance Gore Booth. It explores the close, some say telepathic relationship of the sisters throughout tumultuous times.
  • History Ireland Hedge School; a travelling exhibition on Countess Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth.
  • A special event on Sunday giving North Sligo primary school students the chance to present to the public their works of art and creative writing in response to 1916 personalities with a local connection, and a number of descendants of volunteers, who will attend with relatives’ medals and other family memorabilia.

Conference speakers will include:

Dr Laura McAtackney, associate professor in Sustainable Heritage Management at Aarhus University, Denmark

Dr Eve Morrison, IRC postdoctoral fellow at University College, Dublin

Dr. Sonja Tiernan, senior lecturer in History at Liverpool Hope University

Dr. Mary McAuliffe, Women’s / Gender History at UCD Women’s University and the Peter O’Brien Visiting Professor in Irish Studies at Concordia University 2015-2016

Ní éireodh leis an ngluaiseacht neamhspleách murach an méid a rinne mná na hÉireann agus na róil chinniúnacha a bhí acu.

Tar éis na mílte fear a chur i bpríosún agus tar éis dheireadh sheachtain na Cásca 1916, bhí a ndóthain le déanamh ag na mná muintir na hÉireann a thabhairt leo ina gcroí agus ina n-aigne. Throid siad uirlis bolscaireachta Shasana, bhí bigilí, cainteanna agus léachtaí poiblí acu, bhailigh siad airgead, agus chuir siad iallach ar an eaglais Chaitliceach labhairt amach i gcoinne na mbásuithe trí bheith sásta grianghraif a ghlacadh díobh ag guí lasmuigh de Phríosún Chill Mhaighneann.

Tugann Club Allamuigh Shligigh onóir do thionchar na mban seo ina 8ú Comhdháil Bhliantúil dar teideal Mná na hÉireann: Réabhlóid agus Cuimhneachán. Ón 13-15 Bealtaine, 2016 bí linn sa tsraith bhríomhar leathan seo ina mbeidh cainteanna, léirithe téatair, ceol beo, filíocht agus fiosrúchán stairiúil, agus iad go léir dírithe ar chúnamh na mban do chlaochlú ár náisiúin.

  • Bua, cór ban as Sligeach a bhfuil gné eile ag baint leo.
