The second instalment of the probing Ireland’s Edge conference will take place as part of the eir Other Voices 2016 Festival in Dingle from 2nd-3rd December.

Exploring the lessons learned from the Ireland 2016 experience and putting the spotlight on driving national policy toward a balanced promotion of Irish science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts (STEAM), Ireland’s Edge is a cut above the rest on the national conference circuit.

The gathering aims to ask big questions; in particular, what opportunities exist in today’s Ireland for the nation’s creative people, and what’s next for the country as we move forward toward an uncertain global climate?

A host of select guests from the across the innovative industries will be in attendance at this day and half-long event, from academics to media owners and artists.

Programme Overview

Friday, 2nd December

Day one of the conference will begin with a keynote address by Intel Fellow and Director of User Interaction and Experience and former lecturer in Anthropology and Native American Studies at Stanford University, Dr. Genevieve Bell.

This will be followed by a discussion on how the creativity of the Irish people provides the country with a unique competitive advantage internationally, and how Ireland can continue to harness this energy into the future.

Day one will also play host to enormous creativity with a performance from Collapsing Horse Theatre Company and an interactive storytelling performance of Zoe Philpott’s critically acclaimed show Ada.Ada.Ada.

A structured Q&A, moderated by Philip King will take place, along with a panel chaired by Catriona Crowe, with historian and broadcaster Diarmaid Ferriter, Una Mullally of the Irish Times, and Louise Ní Fhiannachta, director and scriptwriter of Eipic for TG4.

Saturday, 3rd December

Day two will further develop the discourse around the 21st century experience of emigration, the Irish diaspora and the emerging drivers of cultural identity for the Irish overseas.

This discussion will involve some of Ireland’s leading emigrants, including broadcaster and DJ Annie Mac and Senior Editor of News at CNN Digital International, Blathnaid Healy.

Day two will also witness a discussion around the unique experience of Ireland 2016 and how Ireland can build on the momentum created by the programme of commemorative events that marked the centenary of the Easter Rising.

The conference is presented in partnership with Intel, with support from the eir Other Voices Festival of Dingle, Ireland 2016, The Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, The Department of Diaspora Affairs, Microsoft, PwC, Nokia-Bell Labs and CPL.
