On April 24, 1916, 1,200 volunteers changed the landscape of Irish history forever. On April 24, 2016, the Allianz Football League Finals will be followed by Laochra – a must-see spectacular live event celebrating our national identity.

[Ar an 24 Aibreán 1916, d’athraigh 1,200 Óglach cúrsa stair na hÉireann. Ar an 24 Aibreán, 2016, díreach i ndiaidh chluichí ceannais Shraith Peile Allianz, cuirfear ‘Laochra’ ar siúl – ócáid mhórthaibhseach bheo den scoth a dhéanfaidh ceiliúradh ar ár bhféiniúlacht náisiúnta.

While the GAA was not an official participant in the 1916 Rising, some of its members helped organise the rebellion, with many more GAA men participating in the fighting. In preparation for the Rising, Austin Stack, the Kerry GAA chairman, used the 1915 All-Ireland football final as cover to smuggle guns from Dublin to Kerry to arm the Kerry Volunteers.

During the Rising itself, some 300 members of the GAA took part in the fighting in Dublin, while in Galway the majority of the 500 men who carried out limited attacks on the local police barracks on Easer Monday were hurlers. In the aftermath of the Rising, hundreds of GAA members, including the GAA president Alderman Nowlan, were arrested with many sent to Frongoch internment camp, where Gaelic games were played as an expression of Irish identity.

As with the rest of public opinion in Ireland, the outlook of the GAA changed after the executions of the 1916 leaders, five of whom had GAA connections. Following the Rising, the GAA adopted a more republican outlook than before, which brought it into direct conflict with the British authorities on several occasions.

After the Division One and Two Allianz Football League finals on Sunday, April 24, the GAA invite the public to join with club members at Croke Park to celebrate the exact date the Easter Rising began 100 years earlier.

Laochra - The GAA Commemorates 1916 is the Association’s flagship 1916 national commemorative event, a theatrical production dedicated to telling the story of Ireland by showcasing the best aspects of Irish creative culture.

The event will also honour the wider GAA community, and the 132 years of the Gaelic - from its foundations as a promoter of Irish pastimes as part of the Gaelic Revival, through the rebellion, and up to the present day - and the Association’s subsequent place in the hearts of Irish citizens.

Produced in partnership with Tyrone Production, the performance is directed by Ruán Magan.

Cé nach raibh baint oifigiúil ag CLG le hÉirí Amach 1916, chuidigh cuid de bhaill an Chumainn leis an Éirí Amach a eagrú, agus ghlac go leor fear de chuid CLG páirt sa chomhrac freisin. Agus é ag ullmhú don Éirí Amach, bhain Aibhistín de Staic, Cathaoirleach CLG Chiarraí, úsáid as cluiche ceannais peile na hÉireann i 1915 mar sheift le gunnaí a smuigleáil ó Bhaile Átha Cliath go Ciarraí chun airm a fháil do na hÓglaigh i gCiarraí.

Le linn an Éirí Amach féin, ghlac 300 ball de CLG páirt sa troid i mBaile Átha Cliath, agus i nGaillimh ba iománaithe iad formhór an 500 fear a rinne ionsaithe ar dhúin áitiúla na bpóilíní ar Luan Cásca. Gabhadh na céadta ball de CLG i ndiaidh an Éirí Amach, Uachtarán an CLG, an Bardasach Nowlan, san áireamh, agus cuireadh cuid mhaith acu go dtí campa imtheorannaithe Frongoch, áit a mbítí ag imirt cluichí gaelacha mar bhealach leis an bhféiniúlacht Éireannach a chur in iúl.

Ach an oiread le tuairimí an phobail trí chéile in Éirinn, d’athraigh meon an CLG i ndiaidh chur chun báis cheannairí 1916, a raibh baint ag cúigear acu leis an CLG. I ndiaidh an Éirí Amach, bhí claonadh poblachtach ní ba láidre ag an CLG ná mar a bhíodh roimhe sin, rud a d’fhág go raibh an Cumann i gcoimhlint dhíreach le húdaráis na Breataine go minic.

Tar éis chluichí ceannais Roinn a hAon agus Roinn a Dó de Shraith Peile Allianz Dé Domhnaigh an 24 Aibreán, ba mhór ag an CLG go mbeadh an pobal i bPáirc an Chrócaigh in éineacht le baill clubanna chun comóradh a dhéanamh ar an dáta ar thosaigh Éirí Amach na Cásca 100 bliain ó shin.

Is é Laochra – Comóradh CLG ar 1916 buaicphointe imeachtaí náisiúnta comórtha 1916 CLG, agus léiriú drámata atá ann ina n-úsáidtear na gnéithe is fearr de chultúr cruthaitheach na hÉireann le scéal na hÉireann a insint.

Déanfaidh an ócáid comóradh ar phobal leathan CLG freisin, agus an 132 bliain den Chumann – óna thús mar bhealach le caitheamh aimsire Éireannach a chur chun cinn mar chuid den athbheochan Ghaelach, tríd an Éirí Amach, go dtí an lá atá inniu ann – agus an áit lárnach atá ag an gCumann i gcroí agus i saol mhuintir na hÉireann.

Arna léiriú i gcomhpháirtíocht le Tyrone Productions, is é Ruán Magan stiúrthóir an léirithe.
