A newly written play about the life of Major, John McBride.

Dráma nua-scríofa bunaithe ar an Maor Seán Mac Giolla Bhríde.

Major John MacBride was born in Westport in 1868 and was executed after the 1916 Rising. This specially commissioned production, Foxy Jack – Giolla Éireann, gives us an insight into the life of MacBride and the forces behind this complex man.

On his maternal side was the Gill family from Clew Bay who were active back in 1798. His father, a Presbyterian from County Antrim, died the same year that John was born. His brothers were also involved in the republican movement. We see the central role MacBride played in the Irish Brigade in the Boer War, where he was almost killed, as well as his relationship with and marriage to Maud Gonne and the complicated separation a short while after the birth of his only son, Seán, and of course, the part he played in the Easter Rising.

Co-written and directed by Seán Ó Tarpaigh and Diarmuid de Faoite, the production includes newly written bilingual drama, newly composed Irish language poetry accompanied by music and songs of that era.

The cast includes Ó Tarpaigh and De Faoite, along with Mags Gallen, Joan King, Paul Mekitarian, Séamas Mac Eachmharcaigh, Darren Ó Riagáin, Barra Ó Ceallaigh and Daithí Ó Gallachóir. Two local Westport children will also be taking part in this major production – Rebecca Staunton and Tim Carty. Rebecca, a direct descendant of Honoria Gill, will play the part of Maud Gonne’s daughter, Iseult, and Tim Carty will play the part of young Seán MacBride.

Costume Design by Campbell, Lighting Design by Matt Burke, set by Tommy Casby and Dara McGee, multimedia by Seán Cathal Ó Coileáin, Muireann NÍ Raghallaigh is Stage Manager and Sound & Lighting by Paul Dunning and James Biggs.

Songs in the show will be performed by three members of Coda – Declan Askin, Brian Lennon and Conall Ó Domhnaill, and musical accompaniment will be provided by Des Cafferkey, Julie Langan, Bartholomew de Boer and Jack Carney.

The show will take place at 8pm from Wednesday, 28th September to Sunday the 2nd of October.

Rugadh an Maor Seán Mac Giolla Bhríde i gCathair na Mart in 1868, agus cuireadh chun báis é tar éis Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916. Tugann an léiriú coimisiúnaithe seo, Foxy Jack – Giolla Éireann, léargas dúinn ar an saol a bhí ag Mac Giolla Bhríde agus na fórsaí taobh thiar den fhear casta seo.

Ar thaobh a mháthar bhí clann Mhic Giolla ó Chuan Mó a bhí gníomhach siar i 1798. Cailleadh a athair sa bhliain chéanna inar rugadh John. Ba Phreispitéireach ó Chontae Aontroma ó dhúchas é. Bhí a dheartháireacha páirteach sa ghluaiseacht phoblachtach chomh maith. Feicimid an pháirt lárnach a ghlac sé sa Bhriogáid Éireannach i gCogadh na mBórach, áit ba bheag nár maraíodh é, chomh maith leis an gcaidreamh agus pósadh le Maud Gonne agus an scaradh achrannach tamall gearr i ndiaidh don aon mhac aige, Seán, teacht ar an saol, agus ar ndóigh an pháirt a glac sé san Éirí Amach.

Comhscríofa agus stiúrtha ag Seán Ó Tarpaigh agus Diarmuid de Faoite, cuimsíonn an léiriú seo drámaíocht dhátheangach úrnua, filíocht nuascríofa Ghaeilge mar aon le ceol agus amhráin na linne.

Tá Ó Tarpaigh agus De Faoite páirteach sa dráma, i gcomhluadar aisteoirí áitiúla - Mags Gallen, Joan King, Paul Mekitarian, Séamas Mac Eachmharcaigh, Darren Ó Riagáin, Barra Ó Ceallaigh agus Daithí Ó Gallachóir. Tá beirt pháistí áitiúla páirteachsa léiriú chomh maith – Rebecca Staunton agus Tim Carty. Is duine de shliocht Honoria Gill í Rebecca agus glacfaidh sí páirt iníon Maud Gonne, Iseult, sa dráma. Is é Tim Carty a bheidh mar Sheán Óg Mac Giolla Bhríde.

Dearadh Cultacha le Lara Ní Chathmhaoil, Dearadh Soilse le Matt De Búrca, Seit le Tommy Casby agus Dara McGee, Ilmheáin le Seán Cathal Ó Coileáin, Muireann Ní Raghallaigh mar Bhainisteoir Stáite agus Soilsiú agus Fuaim le Paul Dunning agus James Biggs.

Is iad triúr den bhanna CODA a chanfaidh na hamhráin sa seó - Declan Askin, Brian Lennon agus Conall Ó Domhnaill, agus beidh tionlacan ceoil á sheinm ag Des Cafferkey, Julie Langan, Bartholomew de Boer agus Jack Carney.
