General Public Guidance for Major Events on Easter Sunday & Easter Monday

Treoir Ghinearálta don Phobal maidir le hImeachtaí Móra Domhnach Cásca & Luan Cásca

A number of key events take place in the lead up to and over Easter weekend. The following is general information for those who wish to attend at these events.

  • Please note that many of these events are outdoors. Remember to plan for adverse weather conditions and dress appropriately. Check the weather forecast in advance.
  • We ask that you be mindful of young children and where possible facilitate their viewing of events.
  • For your own safety and the safety of others please move slowly when approaching and leaving events where large crowds are present. Please give due consideration to the elderly, to families with young children and to those with impaired mobility.
  • People under the age of 16 should be accompanied by parents/guardian. Children should not be left unsupervised at any stage.
  • It is suggested that parents tell their children that, if they get lost, they are to ask a member of the Garda Síochana or a steward for help. Parents should check that their children can give their full name, address and parent's mobile number.
  • Please use public transport to get to events.

An Garda Síochána specifically advises as follows:

  • Plan your day. If travelling with a large group designate meeting points outside the immediate vicinity of the event.
  • Keep an eye on children and make sure they don’t wander off.
  • Please listen to the advice and instructions given by Gardaí and Stewards.
  • There will be significant restrictions on driving into the city centre. We strongly urge the use of public transport.
  • Be aware of your own personal safety and be mindful of pick-pockets.
  • For further advice and information please visit the Garda website on www.garda.ie.

Easter Sunday

The Easter Sunday State Ceremony and Parade is the centrepiece of the commemorations. It should be noted that access to O’Connell Street on Easter Sunday will be limited due to on-street seating. Use of public rather than private transport is strongly advised.

The public will have access to Upper O’Connell Street. Middle and Lower O’Connell Street will be accessible to invitation holders only. However, there will be viewing opportunities and clearly marked zones with large screens so that members of the public can view the parade as it progresses towards O’Connell Street.

Note the Easter Sunday ceremony and parade will conclude with an Air Corps flypast and a 21-gun salute. Some audience members and parents of young children may find the noise levels disturbing.

Easter Monday

Easter Monday is very much a family friendly day with hundreds of talks, performances and events for all the family to enjoy. Members of the public are strongly advised to use public transport and check their route to and from the city centre.

Beidh roinnt imeachtaí móra ag tarlú sa tréimhse roimh dheireadh seachtaine na Cásca agus i rith an deireadh seachtaine. Seo a leanas roinnt faisnéis ghinearálta dóibh siúd ar mhaith leo freastal ar na himeachtaí sin.

  • Tabhair faoi deara gur amuigh faoin spéir a bheidh go leor de na himeachtaí seo. Ná déan dearmad bheith ullamh don drochaimsir agus éadaí cuí a chaitheamh. Bí cinnte féachaint ar réamhaisnéis na haimsire roimh ré.
  • Iarraimid ort cuimhneamh ar pháistí óga agus freastal orthu chun ligean dóibh féachaint ar na himeachtaí nuair is féidir.
  • Ar mhaithe le do shábháilteacht féin agus le sábháilteacht daoine eile, ná bíodh deifir ort agus tú ag teacht chuig imeachtaí ná ag fágáil imeachtaí ag a bhfuil líon mór daoine i láthair. Ba chóir a bheith tuisceanach le daoine aosta, le teaghlaigh a bhfuil páistí óga acu, agus le daoine a bhfuil deacrachtaí gluaiseachta acu.
  • Ba cheart do thuismitheoirí/chaomhnóir a bheith in éineacht le daoine faoi bhun 16 bliana d’aois. Níor cheart páistí a fhágáil leo féin ag am ar bith.
  • Moltar do thuismitheoirí a rá le páistí cúnamh a lorg ó Gharda nó ó dhuine de na maoir má théann siad amú. Ba cheart do thuismitheoirí déanamh cinnte gur féidir lena bpáistí a n-ainm iomlán, a seoladh, agus uimhir fón póca tuismitheora a thabhairt.
  • Ba cheart an córas iompair phoiblí a úsáid chun dul chomh fada leis na himeachtaí.

Tugann an Garda Síochána an chomhairle shonrach seo a leanas:

  • Pleanáil an lá. Má tá tú ag taisteal le grúpa mór daoine, roghnaigh pointí cruinnithe lasmuigh de gharchomharsanacht an imeachta.
  • Coinnigh súil ar pháistí agus déan cinnte nach n-imíonn siad ar strae.
  • Éist leis an gcomhairle agus leis na treoracha a thugann na Gardaí agus na Maoir.
  • Beidh srianta móra ar thiomáint isteach go lár na cathrach. Molaimid go láidir duit an córas iompair phoiblí a úsáid.
  • Bí ar an airdeall maidir le do shábháilteacht phearsanta féin agus bí cúramach maidir le piocairí póca.
  • Féach láithreán gréasáin na nGardaí ar www.garda.ie chun comhairle agus faisnéis bhreise a fháil.

Domhnach Cásca

Is é an Searmanas Cuimhneacháin Stáit agus Mórshiúl Dhomhnach Cásca croílár na gcuimhneachán. Ba cheart a thabhairt faoi deara nach mbeidh ach rochtain theoranta ar Shráid Uí Chonaill Domhnach Cásca de bharr na suíochán ar an tsráid. Moltar go láidir duit an córas iompair phoiblí a úsáid seachas do charr féin.

Beidh rochtain ag an bpobal ar Shráid Uí Chonaill Uachtarach. Ní bheidh rochtain ar Shráid Uí Chonaill Láir ná Íochtarach ach ag daoine a bhfuil cuireadh acu. Mar sin féin, beidh deiseanna amhairc ann mar aon le zóin a bheidh marcáilte go soiléir ina mbeidh scáileáin mhóra chun gur féidir leis an bpobal féachaint ar an mórshiúl ar an mbealach go Sráid Uí Chonaill.

Cuirfear críoch le searmanas Dhomhnach Cásca le tar-eitilt ón Aerchór agus le cúirtéis 21 ghunna. B’fhéidir go gcuirfeadh an torann ard isteach ar dhaoine áirithe sa lucht féachana agus ar thuismitheoirí a bhfuil leanaí óga acu.

Luan Cásca

Lá an-oiriúnach do theaghlaigh a bheidh i Luan Cásca, agus beidh na céadta caint, léiriú agus imeacht ar siúl don teaghlach ar fad. Moltar go láidir don phobal an córas iompair phoiblí a úsáid agus an bealach isteach go lár na cathrach agus amach uaidh a sheiceáil roimh ré.

Some of the events will be televised and available on RTÉ Player International. You can also see what is happening at the events by following Ireland 2016 on Facebook and Twitter @ireland2016.

4. Why do many of the events have limited public access?

An extensive programme of formal commemorative events has been organised for this centenary year. These events are focussed on remembering and honouring those who took part in the Easter Rising, and especially those who gave their lives. A number of key events take place over the Easter weekend in particular. Due to the nature of the locations of some of these events, capacity is limited and some events are ticket only. However, every opportunity has been made to ensure that members of the public can view the ceremonies either through live broadcast or through the use of public screens at the events where possible. Full details on all state ceremonial events will be updated regularly here on the website.

5. How were members of the public selected to attend events?

Most of the Easter weekend events are open to the public. Where space is restricted a ticketing system is in place – for further details please refer to the details page on the individual event you are interested in.

The invited guests to many of the events are mainly drawn from the closest relatives of the volunteers of the Rising. Every effort was made to be as equitable as possible, to ensure a wide spread of representation and also to accommodate those who indicated they needed assistance etc.

6. Is it still possible to apply for tickets to events?

Tickets are still available for some of the events. For details please refer to the individual page relating to the event you are interested in.

For further information, please refer to http://www.rte.ie/1916 and www.nch.ie as appropriate.

8. What is the general advice about coming in to the events – will the crowds be so large as to make the events difficult for families and older people?

It is expected that there will be large crowds attending these historic events. However, through the extensive collaboration of all those involved in the events every effort is being made to minimise difficulties for those attending.

9. Why is there such a large focus on Dublin?
While the principal Easter Sunday State Commemoration Ceremony and Parade to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising is taking place in Dublin there are a number of other State Ceremonial events taking place throughout Dublin and around the country over Easter weekend. In addition, the Local Authorities are organising an extensive programme of local events to commemorate the centenary.  For further details of these events please see here.
