The Embassy of Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Ireland 2016 Global and Diaspora Fund are pleased to support the Photographers’ Gallery in London display ‘Easter Rising 1916’ - an exhibition drawn from Sean Sexton's photographic collection and curated by Luke Dodd.

Tá áthas ar Ambasáid na hÉireann agus ar Chiste Éireannaigh an Domhain agus an Diaspóra Éire 2016 de chuid na Roinne Gnóthaí Eachtracha tacú leis an taispeántas ‘Easter Rising 1916’ a bheidh ar siúl san Photographers’ Gallery i Londain – taispeántas ina bhfuiltear ag tarraingt ar bhailiúchán grianghrafadóireachta Sean Sexton, agus a bhfuil Luke Dodd i mbun coimeadaíochta air.

This exhibition investigates the significant role played by photography in informing the national consciousness which led to Irish independence, using the 1916 rebellion as a central focal point. It features approximately eighty rarely seen photographs and ephemera, including souvenir postcards, albums, stereoscopic views, press and military photographs.

Sa taispeántas seo, déantar iniúchadh ar an ról nach beag a bhí ag an ngrianghrafadóireacht i dtaobh bonn eolais a thabhairt don mheon náisiúnta as ar eascair neamhspleáchas na hÉireann, agus Éirí Amach 1916 á úsáid mar phointe fócasach lárnach. Tá thart ar ochtó mír san áireamh ann, idir ghrianghraif agus ábhar gearrshaolach is annamh a fheictear, agus ina measc tá cártaí poist cuimhneacháin, albaim, radhairc steiréascópacha, grianghraif phreasa agus grianghraif mhíleata.

The exhibition encompasses a broad range of photographic documents of key events during the transformative years between the 1840s and 1930s. These include portraits of executed leaders, scrapbooks, collages and images of rebellion sites collected as memorabilia. Issues of authenticity and manipulation are explored in images of evictions and military drills - possibly staged for the camera. The contribution of women as active participants in the Rising is also addressed, as well as the women who practiced photography early in its development.

The exhibition is open from 22 January - 3 April 2016.

Cuimsítear sa taispeántas réimse leathan doiciméad grianghrafadóireachta d'eachtraí tábhachtacha a tharla sna blianta cinniúnacha idir na 1840í agus na 1930í. Ina measc siúd tá portráidí de cheannairí a cuireadh chun báis, leabhair ghearrthóg, colláisí agus íomhánna de láithreacha inar tharla eachtraí de chuid an Éirí Amach, agus iad bailithe i gcáil earraí cuimhneacháin. Déantar iniúchadh ar saincheisteanna barántúlachta agus ionramhála in íomhánna ina léirítear díshealbhuithe agus druileanna míleata – a d'fhéadfadh sé ar cuireadh ar bun in aon turas iad don cheamara. Dírítear freisin ar an cion a rinne mná mar rannpháirtithe gníomhacha san Éirí Amach, chomh maith leis an méid a rinne na mná a bhí i mbun grianghrafadóireachta nuair nach raibh an cheird sin ach á forbairt ar dtús.

Beidh an taispeántas ar oscailt ón 22 Eanáir go dtí an 3 Aibreán 2016.
