Cumann Merriman will host a summer school from June 29-July 2, 2016.

Cuirfidh Cumann Merriman scoil samhraidh ar bun ón 29 Meitheamh go dtí an 2 Iúil 2016.

To avoid a clash with Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in August, the Merriman Summer School is being held early in 2016, from Wednesday 29th June to Saturday 2nd July, in Glór in Ennis.

The 2016 School is being organised in partnership with the Irish office of the European Parliament; and the honorary director is Pat Cox, former President of the European Parliament. The academic director is Dr Bríd Quinn of the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Limerick.

The theme, taken from the Easter Proclamation, is ‘Gallant allies in Europe’. As part of the official centenary commemoration of Ireland 1916-2016, it is intended to place the Easter Rising in its international context, the British Empire and the continent of Europe especially, and moving to our own time, to consider Ireland’s relationship with the United Kingdom and the European Union 100 years on from 1916. This latter discussion will be extremely timely as the Merriman Summer School will be held less than a week after the outcome of the UK referendum on membership of the European Union. Speakers will include sitting MEPs, former MEPs, TDs, artists, authors, youth leaders, journalists and noted academics.

There will be a special session to consider ‘Ireland (North and South), Britain and the European Union - in the aftermath of the UK referendum’ with Professor Mary C Murphy (UCC), Steve Aikens MLA, and Brian Hayes TEP. There wil be a wide-ranging discussion in Irish with Liadh Ní Riada MEP, Seán Kelly MEP, Éamon Ó Cuív TD, Professor Michael Cronin (DCU) and Harry McGee (The Irish Times) on Ireland and Europe.

The opening lecture on Wednesday evening, 29 June will be by Professor Diarmaid Ferriter, setting the European context of the Rising and contemporary events. Ruán O’Donnell (most recent biographer of P. H. Pearse) will also discuss transatlantic dimensions of the Rising, and a History Ireland Hedge School, with a distinguished panel, will consider a series of attempts to forge alliances between Irish nationalism and European powers from Hugh O’Neill through Wolfe Tone to Roger Casement.

Pat Cox will conclude the proceedings of the 2016 Merriman Summer School setting out possible future developments in the European Union, in the UK’s relations with the EU, and implications, opportunities and challenges for us in Ireland.

The featured poets at ‘Cúirt an Mheán lae’ (The Mid-Day Court) will be Biddy Jenkinson, Brian Lynch and Gabriel Rosenstock. Other contributors include the dramatist Marina Carr, artist Mick O’Dea and Liam Mac Cóil, author of historical fiction in Irish.

There will be free entry to some sessions at the 2016 Merriman Summer School.

Tickets can be bought for the entire school – at reduced rates this year – and also for individual sessions. Reservations may be made here.

Agus lenár linn féin, 100 bliain i ndiaidh an Éirí Amach, pléifear caidreamh na hÉireann leis an Ríocht Aontaithe agus leis an Aontas Eorpach; beidh an plé seo an-tráthúil mar go mbeidh an scoil samhraidh á reachtáil laistigh de sheachtain de thoradh an reifrinn sa Bhreatain ar bhallraíocht san Aontas Eorpach. Beidh Teachtaí reatha PE, iartheachtaí PE, Teachtaí Dála, ealaíontóirí, údair, cinnirí óige, iriseoirí agus scolairí céimiúla i measc na gcainteoirí.

Pléifidh Ruán O’Donnell, beathaisnéisí an Phiarsaigh, gnéithe trasatlantacha an Éirí Amach agus cíorfar iarrachtaí ó Aodh Mor Ó Néill anall trí Wolfe Tone agus Ruairí Mac Easmainn ar chomhghuaillíocht a chothú idir náisiúnaithe Éireannacha agus mórchumhachtaí Eorpacha ag painéal scoláirí aitheanta le linn Scoil Scairte de cuid History Ireland.

Pat Cox féin a chuirfidh clabhsúr ar imeachtaí na scoile agus é ag cur i gcás a bhféadfadh tarlú feasta don Aontas Eorpach, do chaidreamh na Breataine leis an Aontas, agus deiseanna, dúshláin agus impleachtaí na bhféidireachtaí seo dúinne in Éirinn.

Is iad Biddy Jenkinson, Brian Lynch agus Gabriel Rosenstock na filí a léifidh a saothar féin ag ‘Cúirt an Mheán Lae’, agus i measc na rannpháirtithe eile beidh an drámadóir Marina Carr, an t-ealaíontóir Mick O’Dea agus Liam Mac Cóil, údar ficsin stairiúil sa Ghaeilge.
