A community walking and cycling event featuring five routes to Enniscorthy, County Wexford.

Eachtrasiúlóide agus rothaíochta don phobal a thógann cúig bhealach chun Inis Córthaidh, Contae Loch Garman san áireamh.

Backroads to the Rising is a community walking/cycling event devised by artists Aileen Lambert and Michael Fortune, inspired by the journeys undertaken by men and women from throughout County Wexford during the 1916 Easter Rising.

They are currently seeking interest from individuals, groups and communities from across the county to take part either by walking or cycling one of the five routes to converge on the town on Easter Monday morning in time for the 1916 Easter Rising Commemorations.

You are invited to participate in this momentous occasion by taking part in a stage of the journey.

There are three options which you can choose from:

The Cycle (5 different routes, on average 25km in length)

The Long Walk (5 different routes, on average 12km in length)

The Short Walk (5 different routes, on average 2.5km)

The five routes are:

1. The Seamus Rafter Route: Ballindaggin to Enniscorthy (cyclists starting in Bunclody)
2. The Séan Etchingham Route: Ferns to Enniscorthy (cyclists starting in Gorey)
3. The Lar Redmond Route: Oulart to Enniscorthy (cyclists starting in Kilmuckridge)
4. The Úna Brennan Route: Oilgate to Enniscorthy (cyclists starting in Wexford town)
5. The Philip Lennon Route:Clonroche to Enniscorthy (cyclists starting in New Ross)

This project is inspired by the journeys which the men and women involved in the Rising made in the days leading up to, during and following Easter 1916 in Wexford. These include journeys which survive in local oral history, such as the journey of a young Lar Redmond of Morriscastle, Kilmuckridge who set off on his bike with a shotgun and a handful of cartridges to cycle to Enniscorthy; or the journey of Paul Galligan who cycled with the news from Dublin that the Rising was on; to the countless men and women who walked the roads and fields, spreading the word to neighbouring Ferns, Camolin, Blackwater, Ballindaggin and Bunclody.

This project aims to create a communal collective memory through the process of walking and create a means of remembering and articulating our past and imagining our future. The event is for whole communities, old and new, young and young of heart, for people of the place and visitors alike; all are beckoned to join in this shared experience.

This is a Wexford County Council contribution to the 1916 Centenary Programme.

Is eachtra siúlóide/rothaíochta don phobal é “Cúlbhóithre an Éirí Amach”, réadtiomnaithe ag ealaíontóirí Aileen Lambert agus Michael Lambert agus spreagtha ag na haistir a thóg fir agus mná ar fud Chontae Loch Garman le linn Éirí Amach 1916.

Faoi láthair tá siad ag iarraidh cloisteáil ó dhaoine aonair, ó ghrúpaí agus ó phobail a bheadh sásta páirt a ghlacadh i siúlóid nó i dturas rothaíochta ar cheann amháin do na bealaigh sin agus teacht le chéile ar an mbaile ar maidin Luan Cásca díreach in am do Chomóradh Éirí Amach 1916.

Tugtar cureadh duit bheith lárnach don ócáid stairiúil seo trí pháirt a ghlacadh i ngeábh amháin den aistear.

Tugtar trí rogha duit:

Turas Rothaíochta (5 bhealach dhifriúil, ar mheán 25km ar fhad)

An tSiúlóid Fhada (5 bhealach dhifriúil, ar mheán 12km ar fhad)

An tSiúlóid Ghairid (5 bhealach dhifriúil, ar mheán 2.5km).

Is iad na cúig bhealach ná:

1. Bealach Sheamuis Rafter: Ballindaggin go hInis Córthaidh ( rothaithe ag tosú i Bunclody)
2. Bealach Sheáin Etchingham: Fearna go hInis Córthaidh ( rothaithe ag tosú i nGuaire)

Do spreag na haistir a rinne na fir agus na mná a bhí páirteach in Éirí Amach 1916 i gContae Loch Garman an tionscnamh seo. Maireann na haistir seo fós i mbéal na ndaoine, mar shampla an taistear a rinne an tógfhear Lar Redmond ó Chill Mhucraise a léim ar a rothar le gunna agus dornán chartús agus é ar a thuras go hInis Córthaidh. Nó an taistear a rinne Paul Galligan agus é ag rothaíocht ó Bhaile Átha Cliath chun an scéal a scaipeadh go raibh an tÉirI Amach ar siúl. Áirítear freisin na sluaite fear is ban a shiúil bóithre is páirceanna ag scaipeadh an scéil i measc ceantair Fearna, Cam Eolaing, Abhainn Dubh, Ballindaggin agus Bun Clóidí.

Is é an taidhm atá ag an dtionscnamh seo ná cuimneamh pobal a chruthú trí phróiséas siúlóide ionas go mbeidh ar ár gcumas ár stair a mheabhrú is é a chur in iúl agus ár dtodhchaí a shamhlú.

Tá an teachtra seo dírithe ar an bpobal ar fad, idir shean is nua agus idir óg is aosta, ar mhuintir na háite agus ar chuairteoirí araon. Tá fíor chaoin fáilte roimh gach éinne a bheith páirteach sa dtogra seo.

Is é seo cion-oibre Chomhairle Chontae Loch Garman do Chlár Chéad Bhliain Chomórtha Rialtas na hÉireann.
