James Connolly’s Play - Under Which Flag? and eyewitness accounts of the Rising told through drama, music, dance and song.

Under Which Flag?, dráma a scríobh Séamus Ó Chongaile agus cúntais fianaise súl de’n tEirí Amach á léiriú trí dráma, ceól, damhsa agus amhráin.

Rathfarnham Theatre Group presents: Under which flag? - a play written by James Connolly which first appeared in public in early 1916. The drama concerns the divided loyalties of the O'Donnell Family whose 21-year-old son Frank is determined to enlist with the British Army, before eventually realising that the correct course of action is to join the Nationalist Insurgents in the fight against the British.

The central scene is dominated by the young excitable Mary almost becoming a British informer, but it is her ultimate renewed Irish Nationalism that coerces her lover, Frank, into changing his mind: "You will never need to blush for the boy you sent to fight for Ireland".

The final scene brings all the neighbouring musicians, singers and dancers together for a farewell for the eldest son John who believes that "America is where a man is a free man".

Aspects of the Rising through music, drama, and song bring us eye-witness accounts of the affects of the Rising on the varied lives of the people of Dublin, especially the poor. The Red Cross Hospital in Dublin Castle is where that poignant last meeting takes place between James Connolly, his wife Lily and his daughter Nora,

"After the executions something strange stirred in the people. Tri-coloured badges were worn on coats, caps and hats and songs were whistled and sung."

Léiríonn Rathfarnham Theatre Group Under Which Flag? - dráma de chuid Séamus Ó Chongaile a léiríodh go poiblí don chéad uair i dtús na bliana 1916. Sé bun-abhar an dráma na an scoilt a tharlaíonn i measc Chlann Uí Dhónaill (O’Donnell). Tá fonn ar Frank O’Donnell, fear óg de 21 bliana, liostail in Arm na Breatainne sula a thugann sé faoi deara gur cheart dó páirt a ghlacadh leis an ceannairc náisiúnach ins an troid i gcoinne an Bhreatan.

I radharc lárnach an dráma is beag nar eirigh Máire, óg agus uallach, ina brathadóir do na Breatannaigh, ach nuair a thagann athbheochaint ar a náisiúnachas, cuirtear iallach ar a grá geal Frank a mheón a athrú agus páirt a ghlacadh le hÓglaigh ne hEireann. "You will never need to blush for the boy you sent to fight for Ireland".

Sa radharc deireannach tagann ceóltóirí, amhránaí agus damhsóirí na háite le chéile chun slán a fhágáil ar John, an mac is sinne de’n chlann atá ag imeacht go Americá, áit a cheapann sé go bhfuil saoirse go deimhin ag cách.

Aspects of the Rising-Trí Cheol, Dráma agus Amhrain tugtar dúinn cúntais fianaise súl ar éifeachtaí an t-Eirí Amach ar shaolta muintir Bhaile Átha Cliath, go mór mhór ar na daoine bochta. In Ospidéal na Croise Deirge i gCaisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath tharlaíonn an cruinniú tochtmhar deireannach idir Séamus Ó Chongaile, a bhean Lily agus a iníon Nora.

“Tar éis lamhach ceannairí an tEirí Amach múscail tuairimí aisteacha i muintir na hÉireann. Thosnaigh siad ag caitheamh suaitheantais trídathach ar chótaí, chaipíní agus hataí agus ag canadh agus ag feadaíl ahmráin reabhlóideach.”
