1916 Ancestry Project Tionscadal ar ár Sinsear in 1916

Where was your family in 1916? Were they involved in the Easter Rising or were they across the world, unaware of the events happening in Ireland?

Cá raibh do theaghlach in 1916? An raibh baint acu le hÉirí Amach na Cásca nó an raibh siad ar an taobh eile den domhan, gan eolas ar bith acu ar an méid a bhí ag titim amach in Éirinn?

You can find out in 2016. Play the role of detective and trace your family tree, discover the secret histories and untold stories of your parents and grandparents. Find out what was happening in your local community in 1916 and embark on a trail of discovery using the resources of our National Cultural Institutions. The Schools Collection will provide you with another opportunity to be a historical detective and feed in your local history, or what you have discovered through other projects, to a central platform.

This project will invite all primary and post primary pupils to trace a family tree back to 1916. Students will engage in research to discover more about what individual people were doing and where they were living in 1916.

Students can use resources such as the 1911 census www.census.nationalarchives.ie, military archives and church records, and to forge links with local historical societies http://www.localhistory.ie/ , active retirement groups http://www.activeirl.ie/ , relatives of those who participated in the 1916 Rising, and other local groups to help inform their research, thus fostering inter-generational and community learning. The website portal at http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ is well worth a visit ‘Research in Ireland: Starting Your Family History’ or at the link: www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/irish-genealogical-research-getting-started/how....

In addition, the two national cultural institutions which provide significant advice and online supports are the National Archives (main site at http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ ) and National Library (http://www.nli.ie/ ), each of which have designated genealogy research sections.

When ready, students' 1916 ancestry projects can be uploaded to Scoilnet on https://www.scoilnet.ie/scoilnet-services/scoilnetaccounts/. In order to upload, the projects need to be saved as either a PDF or a PowerPoint and there is a file size limit of 50mb.There is no school limit to the number of projects that can be uploaded and all projects will be searchable by school or roll number at https://www.scoilnet.ie/1916-ancestry-project/.
